How to catch catfish

There are many ways to cat-fishing, ranging from fly fishing to trolling. However, the most successful ways are drift fishing and still fishing using good bait.

The still-fishing method is straightforward. Cast the bait into the lake or river and wait for your target.

Still-fishing requires continuous trials with various casts’ lengths until you find the right spot. Mostly, the catfish is within the shorelines, especially at night when looking for food. However, you will need to cast your bait deep during other times.

Drift fishing is also simple, but a boat is needed. Drift fishing covers a wider area leading to more fishing. Put the bait into the fishing float and observe. You can fish through drift fishing any time of the day though it’s better to fish at night.

Channel Catfish

Channel cats are found all over the water. In rivers, you will find them near the current where other fish are. If you are fishing in the lake, look for catfish around logs and boulders.

You can catch channel fish any time of the day in some locations, while in others, you have to wait till night.

If you are new in a location, you should inquire from the residents to know what time you will be able to have a good catch. You can also seek information from those who sell baits and tackles.

Channel cats are very active during mid-spring, and this is a good period for fishing regardless of the time. Spawn takes place towards the end of spring.

During summer, the best time to fish cats is from sundown to mid or late night. This is when they go to the shore to feed, and you can fish enough cats.

Flathead Catfish

These are located in deep cover close to the current. When they get out of their hiding place to feed, they normally stay at the bottom of the current. To catch this fish, go to the river bends where there are currents and cast the bait.

Though they stay near, they are always in hiding, so fishing at night will give you an easy time catching them.

You can fish flathead fish any day of the year, but the best period is during spring and fall.

Blue Catfish

Blue fish are good at looking for food all over the water body. In lakes, they move from the bottom to open waters. In rivers, you will find them in bends and river convergences. Since they are active all day long, you should look around different spots to find a good location for fishing.

In rivers, there are deep holes and shallow holes. If you find a hole you are interested in, cast the bait on top of that hole. The fish in the hole will feel the scent and come out to feed.

Blue cats and their predators will come out in shallow waters in mid-spring all the way to later fall due to warm waters.

Even though some fish come out to shallow waters from February to May, some fish, like walleyes and bass, will stay deep in the waters. The location determines the time of the year.

Bullheads

These are many, which makes it easy to fish them. Create an angled hook in your bait and cast it in the direction of the water.

Tips for Catching Bullheads

• Go fishing in the evening and at night for a better catch
• They love warmer weather, so fish actively during the time of the year when it’s warm
• Look for the appropriate location to cast the bait.
